She was born on November 11, 1999, in The Bronx, New York into a musical family and hence developed a love for music at a younger age.
She studied at the Fordham High School for the Arts where she performed with the jazz band and won Best Vocalist at Fordham University’s Essentially Ellington competition.

In February 2023, Samara Joy made headlines after winning the Best New Artist at the 2023 GRAMMYs making her the second jazz singer to win the award, the first being Esperanza Spalding in 2011.
